Professional Design
INA: Mr. Chen, How do you define the brand of TaL Group and the
brand new TaL Design?
Mr. Chen: The TaL definition of brand is individualized and detailed. TaL is always specialized in melting every element of the architectural design and the building itself. Our comprehension to architecture is—architecture is the synthesis of humanism and functionalism. A building is a city, the internal and external, private and public spaces of the building reflects each other and interacts with each other. By emphasizing on the whole building and the fusion of architecture and surroundings, and by the comprehension to different types of architecture, the individuality of TaL produces works that carry the TaL design feature. Nowadays in China, for the demands of the developers and the market, architects enthusiastically copy successful works to cope with the competition, and massive repeated design works deserve the criticism. However, during the past decade cooperating with Yanlord Land Group, the demands of innovation by clients makes TaL create a serious of extraordinary works. Some of these works remain classic over more than a decade, emit enduring charm. That is also the result of innovation and comprehension of architecture.
INA: Different design firm has different design culture, so would you please talk about the core design feature of your firm?
Mr. Chen: The core design feature of TaL is—international team, overall control of the projects and high-quality professional services. Differ from many Europe and America architects, our international team can take root in the local and has much superiority in controlling and comprehending the local markets. We always melt different comprehensions into different projects, abandon popular ways, and not limited by traditional styles. We regard architecture is the synthesis of humanism and functionalism based on a certain of pragmatism. Our designers have different backgrounds and design styles, different cultures melted into the local forms our core competitiveness. For projects quality, we emphasize overall and detailed control. We integrate the overseas managerial experiences to form a project team of foreign and local architects which is very important to the control from design to construction. Though the key points are design proposal and its deepening design, we will provide very detailed design drawings from structure to materials to present enforceable proposals. TaL pays great attention to multi-azimuth professional services for clients, provide different solutions in different periods by customer services and project management team’s multi-level project supervisions. TaL insists clients’ success is our success.
INA: All the excellent designers of TaL come from the famous JGP
Architecture, how does TaL inherit the rich experiences of JGP while
position its advantages in the Chinese market?
Mr. Chen: That is also the question we are always thinking about. (How to inherit the past experience and position our advantages in the market…) Based on the design experiences of JGP over a decade, our thoughts are changing. I was used to be a designer and specialized in design, not develop and promote much in the marketing areas which resulted in the losses of some opportunities. The trend of the local market is bigger and stronger, but I see more value in doing what I want. We treat every project with the same concentration rather than like what many big companies do—dividing into different teams and brands, treating different clients with different services. We make no discrimination to whatever sizes of the projects, try our best to be perfect and learn from experiences and mistakes, and solve every problem in the controllable range.
INA: As real estate develops so quickly, there emerges large numbers of outstanding design firms in China, so how does TaL distinguish itself? What are your most remarkable features differ from others?
Mr. Chen: What I mentioned before could have answered the question. Concerning the projects, overall control is important as well as innovative design. It’s hard to be competitive in the market without proper control on the projects. Many domestic design firms are not good at details due to immature domestic markets which limit their further development with too many opportunities and shortage of time. If there’s a market shrank, professional skills and overall control of design implementation will be the key to survive.
High-quality Services
INA: Under nowadays market economy, architectural design is not only design drawings, but also perfect client services. Would you please talk about your core idea of client services in the dog-eat-dog industry?
Mr. Chen: Actually, design is a professional service industry. Experienced designers can guide and convince clients to accept their new ideas and understand their creativities. Even if being rejected, the designers will win the respects of clients who were affected by the creativities. The core design service of TaL is to provide high-quality design and highquality service. We have talked much about the high-quality design, however, high-quality service is to view from different perspectives and conceive how designers, users and developers would think, which would effectively promote the quality of services.
INA: How does TaL try to meet clients’ demands as well as ensure the
high quality and details of the projects?
Mr. Chen: The final design will go through quite a few processes, which integrates architecture, landscape, interior, and structure design. Therefore, the design solution mostly depends on the coordination of problems and contradictions, and conforms to the original theme. To different problems and contradictions, TaL tends to put forward our own ideas and cooperate with our clients, finding the best solutions
International Team
INA: TaL is originated from Singapore, it has absorbed Chinese design power since entering China, and the effective combination of the two design powers forms the key to the development of TaL. So how did you mix these two design powers perfectly? And as an international design team, how does TaL combine international design philosophy with Chinese design requirements?
Mr. Chen: The life style in Singapore is similar to that in China, so design firms from Singapore, especially specialized in residential, are quite popular in China. In addition, these firms bring some different ideas of life, making individual living facilities for every client. Neighborhoods design is the creation of life styles, so as to make the best use of spaces for residents. Many successful people, such as banker and entrepreneurs, have strict requirements to the space privacy. Designers can build public spaces which shared by 20 to 30 owners to ensure relative privacy, thus reducing high maintenance costs for living facilities. For example, a swimming pool shared by 10 to 12 owners is feasible because all the owners will not swim at the same time, which is welcomed in Singapore for its lowered maintenance costs and relative privacies.
INA: How does TaL appraisal the professional competence of designers?
Mr. Chen: We appraisal the professional competence of designers mainly from two aspects—internal appraisals and external feedbacks. From the internal, designers’ abilities are reflected in the drawings; while from the external, clients’ feedbacks are important criteria. Internal appraisal is simpler only from design and technology. As important criteria, client’s feedback is more comprehensive, not only reflecting a designer’s design ability, but also presenting his problem-solving ability, communicative and coordinating ability and comprehensive ability. Therefore, TaL attaches great importance to clients’ feedbacks, regularly collect clients’ suggestions and thoughts. The department of technology can accomplish internal appraisals, which is remarkable— the creative talent is not directly link to whether the work is adopted or not—we lay more emphasis on the thoughts and contents expressed by designers, whether to adopt a work is affected by multiple factors, sometimes the design is very excellent but the developer requires others.
Future Prospects
INA: Nowadays, the real estate policies are constantly adjusted and controlled, the speed of development is gradually slowed down, and the development trend of the market is diversified, detailed and comprehensive, would you please talk about how you and your team plan your development strategies in reaction to the phenomenon?
Mr. Chen: TaL expects to develop in the different markets in the future rather than in our adept residential market. We enjoy great popularity in the residential market, not matter in Shanghai suburb or other areas, many clients will directly entrust TaL to design which shows the confidence in TaL. In the future, TaL will get into multiple areas from high-level housing to diversified commercial complexes. Recently TaL designed some medium-sized commercial architectural works. The detailed and high-end design works will bring us more confidence and professional experiences, and will promote our recognition in the commercial building market. Commercial buildings have been overdeveloped in Chinese market and now in a new sane period, and require a certain degree of design details. Commercial complex has said goodbye to mechanical copy of business model, and runs to individuation and high quality range from design modes to design styles.
INA: What kind of expectations do you have for the ideal condition or future orientation of TaL? What kind of professional team will TaL be?
Mr. Chen: In my opinion, the key to a design firm is to keep its own individualities rather than losing individuation for meeting the demands of the markets. Design without passion will be mechanical and gradually become the products of the production line, and finally no features, no individualities. Actually, the design works that are full of brand characteristics will be the designers’ representative works which will never be forgotten, so our goal is to keep our individualities, build our unique brand and create architectural works which are TaL style. At the meantime, maintain a medium-sized, detailed and individualized team.
